Weatherman is a minimal, experimental pop collaboration between pianist/vocalist Annie Higgins and drummer Jason Toth, with exploratory electronics from composer Joshua Dumas and harmony vocals from singer Angela James. Their inaugural recordings, engineered and mixed by Alex Inglizian at Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio, will be released through-out 2015.
The band began with a focus on the growing groove undercurrent in Higgins’s songwriting for her former band, piano and string quintet, Singing in the Abbey. Her gospel-tinged progressions became an unintentional outlet for a modish, rhythmic itch in Jason, anachronistic with the Handsome Family and Daniel Knox (the other acts that he frequently accompanies). The two were delighted to find instant musical camaraderie with Dumas who also plays in Quarter Mile Thunder and works at Pieholden Suite Sound. Singing together comes so naturally to Higgins and James that she now in turn sings harmony in Angela James’ band.
The band is currently at work on series of singles and accompanying videos for indie label La Société Expéditionnaire. The first, Stormy Dayz /Swimming the Atlantic, was released on February 17th; the second, Night Games /Dopamine was released on May 12th; the third, Wild Geese/Highways will be released in November 2015. The series will culminate in an EP released in early 2016.
Weatherman has shared bills with Juana Molina, Cathedrals, Ryley Walker, Haley Bonar, Smoke Fairies, and Speck Mountain.

Weatherman Release New Single and Video on La Société Expéditionnaire
CHICAGO - On May 12th, Weatherman will celebrate the release of their new single, Night Games / Dopamine, on indie label La Société Expéditionnaire. Single and video preview available below.
This is Weatherman’s second single release. Their first, Stormy Dayz / Swimming the Atlantic was released on La Société Expéditionnaire on February 17th, 2015. Single 01 and 02 are part of a series of three singles, to be followed by their debut EP, available in the fall of 2015.
Weatherman is a minimal, experimental pop collaboration between pianist/vocalist Annie Higgins and drummer Jason Toth, with exploratory electronics from composer Joshua Dumas and harmony vocals from Angela James. These recordings are engineered and mixed by Alex Inglizian at Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio, with supplemental recording by Dumas at Pieholden Suite Sound. They’re mastered by Peter Andreadis at All City Mastering.
The Night Games / Dopamine single finds Weatherman continuing to explore new sounds and forms. Higgins expands her palette, moving between piano and organ, and layering her vocals. Toth tinkers with heavily-effected drums, and Dumas pulls sounds from disparate sources – a field recording of a broken bus engine, an actual mellotron, and a soup of Korg MS-20.
Weatherman will spend the summer working on new recordings, performing around Chicago, and heading out on a few regional mini-tours all in preparation for the release of their debut EP in autumn 2015.
